Full-time international students studying in the fall and spring semesters are required to have health insurance. Students may purchase HPU’s Kaiser Permanent student medical plan for $290 per semester or bring proof of acceptable coverage from their home country (in English).

Plans must meet the following requirements:

Plans that are NOT accepted include:

Students who choose to purchase the Kaiser Permanente insurance may sign up and pay for the insurance plan after their arrival at HPU. Kaiser plan-members can use the on-campus Kaiser Health Clinic facilities. Although winter and summer session students are not required to have health insurance, it is strongly recommended that students arrange for coverage.

Proficiency in English Program (PEP) students only: PEP students are always required to carry health insurance. The cost for health insurance coverage in Hawai'i is approximately $70.00 for a four-week PEP term. Insurance may be obtained upon arrival at HPU.

Students are required to submit written proof of the following medical information:

1. Tuberculosis (T.B.)

International Students are required to take the TB test in the United States. HPU provides arriving students with information on how and where to get tested at no charge. For students subscribing to the HPU Kaiser health care plan, testing is free of charge.

2. Measles (or MMR) Clearance

Students must have received measles shots in their own country (written proof is required) or may receive their measles shots upon arrival at HPU.

Housing Information for International Students

(Hawai‘i Pacific University)

Hawai'i Pacific University offers several options to assist students with their housing needs.

University-Provided Housing:

  • Residence halls on the Hawai'i Loa campus.

It is the University's hope that you will find University-provided housing comfortable, convenient, and conducive to a student's academic success.

Referral Service:

The housing office also manages a referral service that can assist you if you prefer to find your own housing, such as rooms, apartments, or houses.

During registration week the Off-Campus Housing Headquarters (OCHH) is staffed with personnel who can help a student find his or her own apartment.

All full-time (12 credits for undergraduate; 9 credits for graduate) students admitted to HPU are eligible for University-provided housing dependent upon the date when the required non-refundable payment is received in the housing office. Priority is given to degree-seeking students.

Payments for the University residence halls, as stated on the housing application form, must accompany the application form in order to confirm the reservation. An application form received without required payment will be held as "pending" until payment is received.
